About the destination: Situated in the north of China, Beijing is the capital city of the People's Republic of China, the most populated country in the world. With a population exceeding 21 million people, it is the second largest city in the nation, following Shanghai. Beijing is a modern city, boasting impressive new urban and commercial developments, looking towards the future while still deeply connected to its imperial past. Beijing is famous for its extravagant palaces, ancient temples, and massive stone walls and gates. Its art treasures and significant government and cultural institutions have long established the city as a hub of culture and art in China. About the destination: Shanghai is a modern city situated just south of the mouth of the mighty Yangtze River and divided in two by the Huangpu River. About the destination: Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang Province and is one of China’s leading tourist destinations. Famous for its lake, Hangzhou welcomes tens of millions of visitors every year. Despite plenty of modern influences, it still feels very traditionally Chinese, with a slower pace of life that people really value. There’s no shortage of things for visitors to see: dozens of large and small temples and pagodas, beautiful scenery, and sites well known from Chinese history, literature and the arts. Among them is Lingyin Temple, one of the largest Buddhist temple complexes in China. The broad, sweeping West Lake is Hangzhou’s best-known attraction. You can take a boat trip to visit the sights dotted around the lake. Some of the most important spots are Lesser Yingzhou Isle, the Mid-Lake Pavilion, Lord Ruan’s Mound and the romantically named Broken Bridge. Hangzhou is also one of China’s most famous tea-growing areas, and you can take trips out to nearby Longjing Village. A modern, well-off city that still keeps close ties with its past, Hangzhou is one of the most pleasant places in China to spend a bit of time.
