Just above Tirta Empul is the former presidential palace, Istana Tampaksiring, a mid-20th-century complex commissioned by Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno. Access can sometimes be limited and depends on current regulations, but the surrounding viewpoints alone are worth the visit for their panoramas of forested hills and villages. The wider Tampaksiring area is also a gateway to some of Bali’s most beautiful countryside. Small roads twist through terraced rice fields, coconut groves, and traditional villages where life moves at a slower pace. Local homestays and guesthouses give travelers a closer look at Balinese culture, from family shrines and daily offerings to home-cooked meals. Many visitors use Tampaksiring as a base for cycling tours, short hikes, and trips to nearby sights such as the Gunung Kawi temple complex and several less-visited waterfalls. Tampaksiring is easy to reach from Ubud, about a 30–40 minute drive away, making it ideal for a day trip or as a quiet place to stay for a few nights. The climate is a bit cooler than on the coast, especially in the mornings and evenings, so light layers are useful. Basic services, ATMs, and small restaurants are available, but the atmosphere is still rural and authentic.
