Portomarín, Spain

Portomarín Spain

Portomarín is a municipality in the Spanish province of Lugo. It has a population of 2,008 (2001 Spanish Census) and covers an area of 115 km². It lies on the pilgrimage route known as the French Way of the Camino de Santiago. The town of Portomarín was originally built beside a Roman bridge over the Miño River and was rebuilt in the Middle Ages. In the 1960s the Miño was dammed to create the Belesar reservoir, submerging the old village of Portomarín. The town’s most historic buildings were moved, stone by stone, and reconstructed in the new settlement, including its fortress‑like main church, the Church of San Juan of Portomarín. In seasons when the reservoir is low, the remains of old buildings, the former riverfront and the original bridge can still be seen.
